By SVG / September 18, 2014 / 0 Comments

It’s that time of the year again! Art Prize, the international art competition located right here in downtown Grand Rapids, begins on Thursday, September 24th, and runs through October 12th. While exhilarating, the task of navigating through large crowds to view countless art venues can be a tad overwhelming, so we’ve created an easy weekend guide for everything you need to know to make your experience fun and stress-free! Before starting out, stop by any Grand Rapids Meijer location or Art Prize voting site to purchase 2 bus wristbands for $5. This pass gives you unlimited bus rides for all 19 days of Art Prize and can be used on the Silver Line, DASH, and The Rapid. Also, be sure to download the updated Art Prize mobile app available for Apple and Android. The new version allows you to create lists of specific pieces you’d like to see and then share them with your friends and family. You can even map out your own routes! FRIDAY  4:00pm If you’re not already downtown, catch the Silver Line or DASH to Michigan Ave near DeVos Place and check out Art Prize’s West Side and North Monroe route along the Grand River. Monroe Center

By SVG / January 16, 2012 / 0 Comments

Most cities have that core section – where everything happens and everyone wants to be. Monroe Center is arguably the number one hot spot in downtown Grand Rapids. What once used to be a grassy area, Monroe Center Ave. is now bustling with entertainment, shops, and restaurants and is one of the busiest parts of the city. Constructed in the early 2000’s to be a ‘walking street’ for pedestrians, Monroe Center Ave. dissects through the city on a diagonal angle making it a gateway to numerous other parts of the city. It also was changed from walking-only to both walking and motor friendly. Rosa Parks Circle spearheads the start of Monroe Center with a statue of the famous Rosa Parks and a large space used as an amphitheatre for concerts in the summer, an ice skating rink in the winter and place to meet up with friends no matter the season. Just East of Rosa Parks circle is the new Grand Rapids Art Museum. Hosting artists as well known as Andy Warhol and as local as ArtPrize entries. Monroe Center holds city charm due to its brick road and original building facades as you venture down the street. Condo buildings such as McKay Tower, Peck, Front Row, City View and more…
